Conflict is one of the things that we can’t avoid in life, no matter how hard we try to prevent it. It can occur anywhere, and most especially, it can start early. For instance, interpersonal conflict happens when a toddler takes away a toy from another kid. This often leads to arguments, disagreements, or confrontations, especially among older kids at school age. This highlights the importance of conflict resolution skills in children.
Children in a nursery school who learn how to manage disagreements also cultivate their emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is an important factor in conflict prevention and resolution.
This conflict resolution model can help children deal with disputes:
- Stop. Before things get out of control, they need to step back and calm down first. Anger doesn’t contribute to conflict resolution.
- Say. They must identify what the conflict is all about. When they know what is causing the disagreement, they can clarify each other’s expectations.
- Think. They must look for positive solutions and fair options to resolve the conflict.
- Choose. They must act on a positive solution agreed upon by everyone involved.
- Respect. When a compromise can’t be achieved, they must learn to respect the opinions of others.
