Developmental milestones are a set of functional skills developed in correspondence to a certain age or stage in the life of a child.
As a provider of childcare in Northeast Washington, D.C. at Community Educational Research Group, here are among the milestones that your child should reach by 12 months of age or at 1 year old:
- Physical milestones
- Develop their gross motor skills or be able to use big muscles to move the whole body
- Develop their fine motor skills or be able to use smaller muscles for little things
- Cognitive milestones
- Know how to play pretend
- Start to follow simple directions
- Start testing cause and effect
- Be able to identify and point to their body parts
- Language milestones
- Babble in a way that seems like they are trying to talk with you
- Understand basic commands
- Say mama and other simple words
- Social and emotional milestones
- Show reactions such as crying when someone is upset
- Be nervous around new people
- Show affection to caregivers and parents
While developmental milestones are important indicators that they are developing as they should, per our education research group in Washington, D.C., these are not final.
Each child follows a certain pace such that they may experience a milestone later than that sibling or cousin attending preschool in Southeast, Washington, D.C., and vice versa.
